Question
Problem VII- (10 points) “We’re a progressive company, always looking to be ahead of the power curve. We’ll give anything a whirl if it’ll put us ahead of the competition, and that includes every one of us,” says I. B. Daring, an executive with Michigan Manufacturing (2M). You are interviewing him as a preliminary step in a systems project, one in which his subordinates have expressed interest. As you listen to I. B., you look around his office to see that most of the information he has stored on shelves can be classified as internal procedures manuals. In addition, you notice a PC on a back table of I. B.’s office. The monitor’s screen is covered with dust, and the manuals stacked beside the PC are still encased in their original shrink-wrap. Even though you know that 2M uses an intranet, no cables are visible going to or from I. B.’s PC. You look up behind I. B.’s massive mahogany desk to see on the wall five framed oil portraits of 2M’s founders, all clustered around a gold plaque bearing the corporate slogan, which states, “Make sure you’re right, then go ahead.” List the elements of STROBE that you have observed during your interview with I. B. Next to each element of STROBE that you have observed, write a sentence on how you would interpret it.
Explanation / Answer
STROBE:structured observation of environment The method for structured observation of the environment is referred to as STROBE,successful application of STROBE requires that an analyst explicitly observe seven concrete elements commonly found in offices,In the above these are elements we vcan observe by going through
(1)Desk placement :placement of a desk in the office can provide clues to the exercise of power by the decision maker,in these case I.B Daring has not placed the monitor in the right position, and also not maintained the PC neatly, which also signifies the discipline,
(2)STATIONARY OFFICE EQUIPMENT: The manuals, books journals, and other are included in stationary equipment,in these the manuals are not placed in shelves, and they are used for the references but Mr I,B had stacked them beside the computer not even unwrapping them, which again indicates I.B stores very less information personally,
(3)PROPS: Indicate or refers to all small equipment used to process information, including smartphones, calculators, etc which are not seen on the desk of I,Be
(4)EXTERNAL INFORMATION SOURCES:In I,B s case we saw that there is no cables going in or out of the PC ,these indicates his preference for external information from the web, usually for the organisations progress there will be lot of external things that needs to be learnt,in I.B case we can't see that,
(5) slogan make sure you're right then go ahead,is not correctly app for I,B by seeing his desk which is not organised very well,,which is not giving very good impression on Mr,IB
