Question

Use the graph above to answer the following questions about AIMD. The graph represents the
offered load (in attempted throughput) of two TCP connections using AIMD for congestion
control over a single link with maximum bandwidth of R bps.
A. The point Z is at the intersection of X and Y. What is significant about the point and the two
lines in relation to the two TCP connections?
B. As the graph moves from point A, to B, to C, and finally to D, describe what is happening to
the two TCP connections.

VII. Additive Increase/Multiplicative Decrease (10 points) Connection 1 throughput

Explanation / Answer

A. At point Z, both the TCP connections have equal attempted throughputs. So, the channel bandwidth (R) is equally shared by both the connections.

B. As the graph moves from point A to B to C and D, each connection attempts to increase their throughput in an additive manner, until a packet loss occurs (when the total bandwidth exceeds R). At that point the throughput is decreased exponentially and the connections again triy to incease their throughput additively.
