Question
Using Relational Algebra, I need help with the database management question below:
Please explain each step because I am still trying to really get the hang of Relational Algebra queries.
Find those parts that are used in two different steps of the same Instruction Book. The answer will have columns Part#, I#, Step#(1), and Step#(2).
Here are the tables:
Furniture (FID, Manufacturer Name, Model#, Model Name, Description, I#)
Parts (Part#)
Wood (Part#, Wood Piece Length, Wood Piece Width, Wood Piece Height, Wood Piece Type [Of Wood])
Nuts and Bolts (Part#, Length, Diameter, Thread Count)
Instructions (I#)
Instruction Step (I#, Step#, Text)
Warehouse Location (Aisle, Shelf, Bin#, Part#)
Used In (I#, Step#, Part#¸Number Used)
Package (FID, Part#, Number Used)
Thank you!
Explanation / Answer
Here we have to use two different tables for getting the answer. The tables are "instruction step" ,and "used in".Here from the answer it has clearly shown that the answer table will consist of part# ,I #, step#(1) and step#(2). If we apply Join operation between "instruction step" "used in" we will get all above 4 attribute from" instruction step" we can get I# and step1#, from usedIn table we can get I #,step2#,part#.
We can perform join operation with respect to I#.
