Explanation / Answer

CAGE is a framework which identifies Cultural, Administrative, Geographic and Economic differences or distances between countries. While developing the international strategies, the companies should address CAGE. It helps in finding out the patterns such as trade, capital, people flows etc. It helps the manager to find out the impact of distance across the four factors.

This can be analysed according to the Bilateral and unilateral type. It helps manager to know the gap in culture, administrative, geographic and economics

Each facet of the CAGE is described one by one with example below:

Culture:

Culture means the values, beliefs, norms and traditions. The culture very across the country. Each country has their own culture. For example, Japan and USA following the different cultures while doing the business. As the Japanese people do the business on the basis of the team work but in the USA companies do the business on the individual. US company’s decision making is quick generally but Japanese companies are little bit slow. So, there is gap between them which would be find out with this.

Administrative:

Administrative differences amongst the countries are there. It consists of the legal in terms of trade, political linkage, Laws prevailing in the country etc. This framework makes the manager to examine that whether there is any linkage between the political factors that may favour or unfavour the business in the country. For example, the trade block NAFTA made USA to do the business with Mexico and Canada. But the hostile administration of Cuba does not allow US to do the business. So, this would be analysed by this framework.

Geographic:

The physical location of the country, size, climatic conditions, means of communication information systems etc. and all comes in the Geographic of the country. In order to do the business company should analyse the geographic of the company. For example, if we take the example of USA and India, they both have the different climatic conditions, size and means of the communication for technology too. So, in order to find out the difference from the framework one should have to consider all the factors.

Economic:

Economics consists of the following factors such as GDP, Per capita income, growth rate, Inflation, FDI, Currency, etc. The economic distance is also being analysed to run the business in that particular country. For example, Japan’s GDP is approximately 4.93 Trillion USD whereas the USA GDP is 18.57 Trillion which is far more from the Japan. So, these distant factors and patterns would be analysed by the CAGE framework
