Figure 11.14 shows the TCP stream of the encrypted packets. The most noticeable feature in the figure is that the text is completely unreadable.
Answer the following questions:
1. Why is SSL useful?
2. Use Wikipedia or other information resources to write a brief summary of the evolution of SSL and TLS.
3. Log in to a secure website and examine packets exchanged after the secure connection was established. What is the port number used by the remote web server for SSL connections? (These packets are easily located as using the TLS protocol. The question asks for the port associated with “https.”)
4. Right-click on a packet sent using SSL and select “Follow TCP Stream.” Show the screenshot of the TCP stream.
Explanation / Answer
1. SSL is very usefull because this is a secure socket layer which protects out important and senstive information over the internet. It provides security, and data intigrity of both ourdata and websites data.
2. SSL protocol was originally developed by the Netscape and the SSL version 1.0 was never released into the market as this having many security flaws and later in 1995 version 2.0 was released but this is also got very crtical acclaims that there is many security flaws in this also.
And later version 3.0 was developed and this was successfull and actually this has been the base protocol for all its successors i.e. for SSL/TLS. And later the upgraded version to 3.0 is TLS 1.0 and even ther is significant changes are there but this weakens the security provided by SSL version 3.0.
And later years in 2006 TLS version 1.1 is introduced with several added features like protection against cipher attacks and etc. Later in 2008 Version 1.2 is released and purly based on version 1.0 but with many enhancements and changes with improved security and features.
Now in 2016 TLS version 1.3 is relased and this is based on the earlier verion 1.2 with major differences and enhancements.
