When considering a migration from an existing, internal data center to a cloud environment, describe examples of upfront and ongoing costs that would needs to be considered when analyzing the cost of such an effort?
2) What are locked-in costs and what considerations should be made with respect to locked-in costs when considering a migration to cloud computing?
3) What is public key infrastructure and how can it used within a cloud computing environment?
Please help me with this cloud computing assignment. THANK you
Explanation / Answer
Answer to Part 1:
Challenges faced during Cloud Migration:
Though there are many benefits of migration of data to a cloud but companies usually face many problems, some of them are:
1. Security Issues: The data that is to be moved to the cloud undergoes a migration process wherein the entire or a part of the data is moved to the cloud server. The data is sensitive in nature and means a lot to the organization and if the data leaks during the migration then this will not only hamper the organization monetarily but would also to its reputation.
2. Portability: The data is to be moved from one server to the another cloud server, hence we need to check that the components or software that runs on the previous environment also runs on the new cloud server.
3. Cost and Time: It is a big overhead to move the workload of an entire organization to a new server from finanicial point of view as well as the time it takes to perform the same during the migration process.
4. Adaptability: An organization that takes in an entirely new environment(cloud) to run its software will require tools and trained staff and changes in its authority. This is considered a challenge to an organization.
Answer to Part 2:
Vendor Lock-in is a scenario in which a customer that has been using a product /service fails to make a transition to a competitors service. Vendor lock in costs are the overhead that the organization undergoes in the process of making the above changes in its work culture.
Cloud services adoption is getting avoided because of the fear of vendor lock-in. There are many complexitioes that are faced during the migration to a cloud and hence many customers stick to their existing providers, where their needs are not met and in order to avoid such a cumbersome process they compromise. Hence it is important to choose the services to be used wisely so as to avoid the problem of vendor lock-in.
Answer to Part 3:
Cloud Computing is the fastest growing technology in the IT industry today. In order to provide securit to data in an organization services such as confidentiality, authentication, integrity, non-repudiation, etc, Public Key Infrasructure is used. In order to support secure connection between different involved entities, PKI uses a framework which consists of security policies, protocols and various procedures. This is a hybrid mode of symmetric and asymmetric encryption and decryption of data.
