Question
The local area network shown in the figure shown below has two hubs (Y and Z) and two switches (A and X) interconnecting the workstations and servers. What workstations and servers will receive a copy of a packet if the following workstations/servers transmit a message Workstation 1 sends a message to workstation 4: a, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 e, b, 4, 5, and 6 c. 4 d 2, 3 and 4 e. all workstations workstation 2 sends a message to server 1: a, 1.3, and server 1 b. server 1 c 7, 8, and server 1 d. 1.3, 7, 8, and server 1 Server 1 sends a message to workstation 6 a, 6 b, 4, 5, and 6. c, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 d 6, 7, and 8 e all workstations Replace Y with a switch in the figure shown below. Now what workstations and servers will receive a copy of a packet if the following workstations/servers transmit a message: workstation 1 sends a message to workstation 7 a server 1 b, 2, 3, 7, 8, and server 1 c. 1, 2, 3 and server 1 d 7, 8, and server 1 workstation 5 sends a message to Workstation 2: a. 2 1, 2, and 3 c 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 d, 2, 4, 5, and 6 e. all the workstations workstation 4 sends a message to workstation 7: a. 7 b, 7.8, and Server 1 c 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and server 1 d. all the workstations Server 1 sends a message to workstation 6: a. 6 b, 4, 5, and 6 c. 1. 2, 3, 4, 5. and 6 d. 1.2, 3, and 6 e, 6, 7, and 8Explanation / Answer
Logic:
Hubs are not intelligent. Hubs replicate the incoming packet and place the packet in all the output interfaces of the hub, even though the interface does not lead to the destination.
Switches are smart and they does not place the incoming packet in all the outgoing Interfaces.
69: Hub Y copies the packet and computer 4, 5, 6 will receive the packet.
70: Hub Z copies the packet and computer 7, 8 and server 1 will receive the packet.
71: Hub X and Hub Y copies the packet and computer 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 will receive the packet.
72: Hub Z copies the packet and computer 7, 8 and server 1 will receive the packet.
73: Both workstations are connected to switches and we don’t have any hub in between, so only the destination, i.e. workstation 2 will receive the packet
74: Hub Z copies the packet and computer 7, 8 and server 1 will receive the packet.
75: Workstation 6 will receive the packet, and hub Z will copy the packet and computer 7, 8 (and also the new switch) will receive the packet.
I hope you now know the difference between hub and switches. If you need more guidance on this, please feel free to comment below. I shall try my best to remove all doubts you have.
