Question

Several basic “principles” or reasons make psychological social engineering effective. These include authority, intimidation, consensus/social proof, scar- city, urgency, familiarity/liking, and trust. Table 2-6 in your text uses these principles in a scenario of an attacker pretending to be the chief executive officer (CEO) calling the organization’s help desk to have a password reset. Create two additional scenarios, such as an attacker impersonating a help desk employee who wants access to an employee’s protected information, and create a dialog example for at least 3 of the 7 principles.

Explanation / Answer

There are some limitations of social engineering. It is not mind control. With the social engineering we can never guarantee compliance. While with sicial engineering we can not despite the fact that we can’t force compliance, In precent days Social engineering tactics increase the likelihood of compliance. The main theme of social engineer is to construct an environment that increases the likelihood of compliance. Emotion is themain factor of compliance. These are the only motivating force behind behavior, which shapes direct our decisions. There is a theory that is useful for discussing social engineering and emotions is the Conceptual-Act Model of Emotion (C.A.M.E.). The main theme of C.A.M.E. is that the emotion is based upon how we interpret our core affective state, using our knowledge. This is the only reason why framing in social engineering. It changes the context, which changes our interpretation. If we can affect the source of a behavior, then it effectss behavior itself. Let us consider there are several non-traditionalmethods to affect emotion, such as emotional transference, that can be used successfully in social engineering. The concept of psychological hedonism is to maintain emotions. It is nothing but an idea that while making decisions we have to consider goals. This means that we try to increase positive emotions. Emotions are only part of social engineering puzzle, then logistics are the other half. Emotions just provideas the motivation and goals for behavior, not the path. The process of Associating compliance with emotion-motivated goals causes an incentive for compliance. If compliance is not associated then there is little incentive for the desired behavior.while we are attempting to social engineer someone, how strongly compliance and emotion-motivated goals are associated, is based on their perception.
