Coming to wireless encryption protocols these protocols i would prefer

WEP - Uses a 40-bit or 104-bit key
WPA/WPA2 Personal - Uses a 256-bit pre-shared key
WPA/WPA2 Enterprise - Requires a RADIUS server

coming to network protocols,PPTP is a protocol created by Microsoft.The main advantage is it works with Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) to create a virtual Internet connection. Due to this the networks can be easily use their Internet as their WAN link.This also allows private network security by using virtual private network (VPN) by the method of connectivity.By using dial-up access PPTP will creates a secure WAN connection.

It is also known as tunneling protocol . Why because this protocol dials via the PPP connection. Due to this it leads to secure connection between client and server.

The other protocol is Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP). it is an upgraded and enhancement of PPTP and also used to create a VPN.It is a combination of Cisco's Layer 2 Forwarding (L2F) tunneling protocols and PPTP.It operates at the data link layer of model based on the (OSI) model.For sending packets and for for maintaining the connection it uses User Datagram Protocol (UDP).At last for encryption of the data it uses Internet Protocol Security (IPSec). for dial up network conncetions ppp protocol is used.
