Question
If given the choice as a hypothetical user within a specific setting/context in a large health care organization (e.g., an emergency room physician, a nurse manager, a billing clerk), would you prefer to work with best of breed systems from various vendors or with a monolithic system from a single vendor? In your response, be sure to identify the hypothetical user role in which you would be functioning and to support your reasoning using specific examples that reflect the setting/context in which you would be working with the chosen system
Explanation / Answer
Role: Emergency room physician
Explanation:
I would be working with best of breed systems from various vendors.
Reason is that, in a health care organization it utmost important that the patient health it perfectly monitored.
For that, it may require various equipment from various vendors. It is not possible for only one vendor to make the every equipment the best in the market.
It may happen for example vendor A has the best X-ray machines, but not so good ECG machines and Vendor B may have best ECG machine in the market but not the best X-ray machines.
In this case, I would prefer to buy X-ray machine from vendor A and ECG machine from vendor B to get the best of all equipment currently in the market.
A wrong result in monitoring a person’s health can lead to a great disaster. Therefore, it should be the utmost priority of the health organization to have the best equipment in the market though it may come from different vendors.
In today’s world, vendors are focusing in giving demo of their equipment as to how it works, so it should not be a problem to use these systems from various vendors.
Suppose a emergency patient comes in an hospital and the emergency room physician needs to conduct certain critical tests to analyze the situation and then begin diagnosis. He/she will be heavily dependent on the systems for their results according to which he/she has to take a decision and act. It these systems now are not accurate enough then the physician can end up making a wrong diagnosis of the patient, which may lead to chain of disastrous situations. In this cast the physician would definitely want the best in the market systems from various vendors.
