Role of unions in the twenty-first century:

With the changing economic environment of the new century, the role of unions are also constantly upgrading. Many scholars are researching on the role of unions and specifically on impact of union-management relations on business and manufacturing. The clues that historical context provide for directing current union/management relations. Some of the facts that were identified are highlighted as follows:

After analyzing the findings from several research on this topic, I have identified that unions acts as a tool for negotiating terms and conditions that are favorable for union members. Some of these conditions include hike in wages, fighting against unacceptable working conditions etc.

Labor Unions play a significant role in American business and manufacturing. However, there it is evident that private union membership is declining over past decades. And a reason behind this is identified as National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) is unable to adapt external changes such as increased productivity and competition.

Therefore, In my opinion the role and purpose of the modern union need to be redefined to effectively serve its membership in this changing economic environment. The primary reason to support my opinion is that once the business increases its mobility and increase its production in manufacturing the impact of NLRA is reduced. This decline in unionization is a clear evidence of ineffective labor.
