Question

In the past week, we discussed about different features of ATM. As we know, ATM is a complete communication suit that is spread over physical, data-link and networking layers. In the past week, the connection-oriented nature of ATM was compared to the connection-less nature of IP protocol. In this week, as we study data-link layer, ATM can also be compared with this layer's alternatives, e.g. with Ethernet. Consider designing an interanet for a multimedia company that needs high speed media streaming. Continue your discussion about the preferred ATM (ABR) and how it can be implemented in data-link layer. Discuss about your (and other classmates') solutions. How may such an ATM solution be compared to an IP network over Ethernet, in terms of control, flexibility, adaptability, cost and manageability? To complete this Discussion: Post: Submit an initial post in which you present an argument to refute your stance from ATM(ABR). Suggestions include worst-case scenarios, differing definitions of efficiency and technical issues.

Explanation / Answer

ATM has established quality of service standards. This is the key strength of ATM. Currently ATM is the best technology for transmitting voice, video and computer data over a single line. ATM offers a choice of four different types of service.Constant Bit Rate, CBR, provides a fixed and steady bit rate for real-time data. Analogous to a circuit-switched line. This is the most simple service level.Available Bit Rate, ABR, is a service for applications that can negotiate the bit rate during the transfer. The available bit rate varies in the network and the applications must adjust to different bit rates based on feedback from the network.Available Bit Rate, ABR, is a service for applications that can negotiate the bit rate during the transfer. The mechanisms for achieving quality of service are complex. In order to have quality of service from end to end, the ATM switches must implement quality based routing over the PNNI-interface. Since PNNI lacked a standard for a long time, and being a complex entity, there are still problems in getting quality of service features to work between equipment from different vendors.
