Regarding the development of a sample design proposal for the Santa Fe Grill, a probability sample should be used. For one, it is the most commonly used sample because it allows market researchers to draw statistical inferences. A probability sample would ensure an unbiased selection of the sampling units as well as the proper sample representation of the defined target population.

            There are a few sampling designs that could be employed into this research. Simple random sampling would allow every sampling unit to have a known and equal chance of being selected; which could be beneficial to Santa Fe Grill’s research. However, the sampling design that should be employed is a stratified random sample. Stratified sampling would divide the population into two or three groups in order to draw a certain number of people from each group. The advantage of using stratified random sampling would be the ability to make estimates for the target population with the expectation of greater precision and less error in the sample.

            Potential respondents could be selected for the study in numerous ways. Based on the selection of stratified random sampling for the study, the strata subdivisions could be based upon demographics and other factors. Strata could be divided based upon different household incomes, geographical location, or even how often a respondent eats out. However, there is difficulty that lies within having the largest number of relevant strata which provides more accurate results. The study’s strata must be based on the target population of the Santa Fe Grill and their characteristics of interest.

            For the purpose of this study, a larger sample size is ideal because with more respondents, of the target population, comes more precision. Anywhere between 100-200 participants would be ideal, but it would still be acceptable for the sample size to go beyond that number. As for selecting the sample units, the study should aim to obtain units that contain an acceptable frame of the target population elements such as age, location, and frequency of dining out.
