I recommend and suggest to go with this reference list as it compises all the necessary actions that have to be carried in order to have secured conncetion and transmission of data over the network. IOT applications integrates both development scenarios and operations and together performs actions over the network.
To have access to the applications that are prsent outside the network, make sure to implement secured connection by establishing trusted connections through implementing SSL certificates over the network and also stronf firewall management has to be placed. Apart from this all the referenece list has no flaws and meant to have secured transmission.
If it has default ID and password its better to customize it and if it is not possible to customize create a ID at the startup page of the network and assign strong password. Updates help network to remove patches and keeps secured. So its recommende to have latest software patch thereby keeping device updated. Restrictions for other users to connect to the network is strongly recommnded.
