In the article, the author states that strategic change and organization structure are correlated. In the article, the author concludes that innovation strategy is used to bring a change in the flat structure, cost minimization to bring a change in the matrix structure and imitation strategy to bring a change in a mix of both flat and matrix structures. I do not agree with this conclusion by the author. From my critical analysis, I understood that Weber’s bureaucratic structure is changing to a more decentralized matrix organization structure based on project management. This change is fueled by creativity and innovation and is suitable to the current dynamic business environment. Hence innovation strategy is applicable more in the functional and matrix organization structure environments and cost minimization strategy is applicable in a mix of flat and matrix organization structure environment by cutting down the personnel costs.
The author concludes that employee attitude is the primary cause of bringing a change in the organization structure. According to Peter Drucker’s age of discontinuity change model, the primary forces to bring a change include the knowledge capital, culture, globalization and new technologies. I understood that there is more than one cause to bring a change in the structure of the organization. The author states that employee resistance to change is the major barrier to change but in my reading, there are cultural barriers, language barriers, and technology barriers that are crucial for organization change. Overall, I agree with the author that the organizational structure must be aligned with the strategic change to bring a successful change in the organization. I understood the concept of organizational structure and organizational change are aligned to each other as a result of this article analysis.
