There is an application that transmits N-bit unit of data every x time units, where x is small and fixed. In addition, when the application starts, it continues running for a relatively long period of time. For this kind of application, answer the following questions:
a- Would a circuit-switched network or a packet-switched network be more suitable? Why?
b- Assume that we used a packet-switched network. If the only traffic is generated by the application that we explained above, and the sum of data rate is less than the capacity of each and every link in the network, do we need some form of congestion control? Why?
Explanation / Answer
A) A circuit-switched network might be properly proper to the utility due to the fact the software involves long classes with predictable smooth bandwidth requirements. Since the transmission price is known and no longer bursty, bandwidth may be reserved for each application session without great waste. In addition, overhead costs for setting up long-term specific application sessions and tearing the connection are quantized.
B) In the critical case, all the packages concurrently transmit over one or greater community hyperlinks. However, seeing that each link has sufficient bandwidth to deal with the sum of all of the packages' records rates, no congestion (very little queuing) will occur. Given such beneficial hyperlink capacities, the community does not want congestion to manipulate mechanisms.
