A project manager’s toolbox may contain numerous tools, some that are used on every project, and others that are used only under special circumstances.

The options available in this discussion have ethical considerations that are important to consider as a project manager. This discussion requires you to identify how specific project management tools are applied and from the data derived, make important decisions about a project.

Briefly describe a business scenario for an ongoing project (this can be your project, a project you worked on, or a project you read about).

1. Identify how slack was used by the project manager.

Explanation / Answer

The following business scenario is taken up from a personal experience.

1. Business Scenario :-

A firm has taken up a frnachise of a school to be built in Silchar,a city in the state of Assam in the North-Eastern part of India. The area has been demarcate in such a way that it can contain two compunds along with the playground. The structure of one building has been constructed and puty has been applied. The area where the second building has to be constructed, land piling is to be done before constructing the structure. This is a 'critical activity'.
The project manager decided to focus on the land piling part extensively and ignored the painting of the building already constructed due to temporaryt shortage of funds. The short hault in the painting will not delay the project as a whole and the puty of the building also needs to dry up in the meantime.

This was the slack used by the project manager.

2. According to the situation explained above, this was the appropriate use of the slack or float technique.The task he chose to be delayed in the project network caused no other delay in the subsequent tasks or project as a whole.

3. We learn that the appropriate use of the slack technique in the project networks can be very useful for the organisation. It can help in saving critical time and money at crucial times or maintain the stability of the project by balancing the priotiy of the tasks at a given time. An efficient operations management involves effective project management skills which inculcates appropriate use of slack as shown by the project manager in the above example.
