Question

In the back of an old cupboard you discover a note signed by a pirate famous for his bizarre sense of humor and love of logical puzzles. In the note he wrote that he had hidden treasure somewhere on the property. He lists five statements that are all true and challenges the reader to figure out the location of the treasure from the statements. Here are the statements:

a. If this house is next to a lake, then the treasure is not in the kitchen.
b. If the tree in the front yard is an elm, then the treasure is in the kitchen.
c. This house is next to a lake.
d. The tree in the front yard is an elm or the treasure is buried under the flagpole.
e. If the tree in the back yard is an oak, then the treasure is in the garage.

Where is the treasure hidden? Prove your answer using the rules of inference in section 1.6 of the textbook.

Explanation / Answer

Hi,
First lets represent the scenarios in logical form,let
House is next to lake be- A
Treasure is not in kitchen be - B
Tree in front yard is elm be - C
Tree in back yard is Oak be - D
Treasure is in Garage- E
Treasure is buried under flagpole- F
now, lets re write the conditions given in logical form
1. A-> B
2. C->~B
3.A
4. C v F
5.D->E
now, we know all of these statments are true,
consider 1 and 3, from modulus poneus A (A->B) is equal to B i.e Treasure is not in kitchen
now from 2, C->~B, but we know ~B is false(since B is true), therefore C must be False to hold the statement true,
therefore C is true, i.e Tree in front yard is NOT elm,
from 4 we have,
C v F, but we know C is false, therefore F must be true, that is treasure is buried under the flagpole.
Thumbs up if this was helpful, otherwise let me know in comments
