How many records does the file contain? How many fields are there per record? 2. What problem would you encounter if you wanted to produce a listing by city? How would you solve this problem by altering the file structure? 3. If you wanted to produce a listing of the file contents by last name, area code, city, state, or zip code, how would you alter the file structure? What data redundancies do you detect? How could those redundancies lead to anomalies? 4. The file structure for Problems 5-8 FIGURE P1.5 PR pulpnOLNAE Be UdL bejule .ce ocel.ce oorn muru s Bepog 105 David F. Identify and discuss the serious data redundancy problems exhibited by the file structure shown in Figure P1.5 6. Looking at the EMP_NAME and EMP PHONE contents in Figure P1.5, what changels) would you recommend? 7. Identify the various data sources in the file you examined in Problem 5 8. Given your answer to Problem 7, what new files should you create to help eliminate the data redundancies found in the file shown in Figure P1.5?Explanation / Answer
1. This file contains 7 Records and there are 5 fields per record.
Records are nothing but the rows in files which are a seet of meaningfull data and the fields are nothing but meaningfull unit of information.
2. Here the fields are not a fixed length to produce the list by city. In each field the length varies. For example if we take manager_address field each address stored in 7 rows are different in length which means we can call it as a variable length. If we want to produce the list by city name either we need to maintain this field as fixed length or we need to maintain city field seperatly as new field.
3. If we want to produce the file contents by lastname, area code, city, state or zip code we need to alter the file system structure by adding up all these fields and by maintaining respective values in it. Here at present we are having lastname merged with firstname and all the remaining as single field address. So we need to divide the present structure and to create individual fields.
4. Here I found data redundency in the name field. Here there are multiple fields with same name. This results update anomalies. If we tried to update data based on the name field It doesn't know where to store the new value and ended up in a confusing state. For example if someone said update the manager phone having name Holly B Parker then we don't know in which project we need to update because there are mulitple projects are there with the same manager name.
