In Chapter 4, we highlighted work-related stressors, including organizational constraints (e.g., lack of resources), interpersonal conflict (including harassment), work overload, and low task control. Of course, there are many non-work-relatedstressors that increasingly come into the discussion. Elaborate on important non-work stressors and fully describe their impact on the work environment.

Explanation / Answer

It is obviously true that the stress staff members experience is usually not work related. Stress can be triggered by several factors like-

It’s an actual dilemma for employers as to how best to tackle these nonwork stress issues which personnel encounter. Identifying (& coping with) these kinds of individual stress issues isn’t usually an element of a Stress Risk evaluation survey, chiefly since workplace risk assessments concentrate on only work associated hazards . Nor would it be ethical / apt to identify at-risk persons as it would clearly compromise confidentiality/ anonymity.

However, the reality persists that stress is not merely an organizational issue. It can be, & usually is, an important concern for persons, that raises the risk of physical & mental health issues. And since stress impacts performance, behavioural patterns, productivity at work, neither should it be uncared for at the workplace. Management of stress on an individual-level is thus better thought of as an element of a firm's Stress Risk Management & assistance procedures & tackled with in a very distinct manner.

Line managers, who require training in this domain, have a chief role to play in the timely identification of such issues. And assistance structures like Employee Assistance Programs can be quite useful, providing staff members with access to Counselling & such other support services confidentially. Occasionally external experts like psychotherapists also play a significant role in supporting persons with stress issues.

It is a good practice to clearly specify within your well-being or stress policy as to what support is available for staff members who encounter non-work stress issues & how persons can avail that support. Giving a commercial EAP isn’t the only alternative & may not be feasible for smaller firms or those with lesser resources. Thus it is worthwhile checking out what free assistance services are available locally.
