Question

Effective communication depends on the informal understandings among the parties involved that are based on the trust developed between them. When trust exists, there is implicit understanding within communication, cultural differences may be overlooked, and problems can be dealt with more easily. The meaning of trust and how it is developed and communicated vary across societies. Similarly, some cultures have a greater propensity to be trusting than others. Based on this information, comment on the following four issues: What implication does this information have on the kind of approach to use as a manager when dealing with communication, trust, and cultural differences? What do you think are informal understandings? When dealing with situations that maybe dangerous or hazardous, do the same principles of effective communication and trust apply? Why or why not? Would the premise change when dealing with a dangerous individual or individuals from a different culture?

Explanation / Answer

As a manager, it is imperative for him to communicate with his team in order to work effectively. A good communication involves the exchange of information and being able to communicate ones thought to the other hence, a manager should be able to connect with his team emotionally, empathetically and simultaneously bring out the best out of his team. Hence, the informal understanding is extremely important for any manager and his colleagues to develop a synergy at work.

Informal understanding could be the body language, facial expression or other behavioral signals which are enough to understand the state of the person in front of us. Informal understandings are necessary since it allows to connect personally with the person.

Yes, While dealing with difficult situations or dealing with difficult individuals from a different culture would also require the same principles of communication because effective communication is when we connect with the person emotionally and try to understand what thoughts he intends to share with us. Hence cultural differences would only change slightly the way to effective communication.
