Non verbal communication refers to the communication that does not take place using words. It involves sending and reciving messages of non verbal nature that is messages which are not encoded or decoded in some words.
Non verbal does not mean oral butit could be oral more than written. Non verbal coomunication are of mainly following types -
1) Kinesics - body language : one mostly communicate through body language than any other non veral means. In fact in a personal face toface communication 80% of communication takes place through body language. This include a number of ways through one send and recive some messages. Such as facial expressions (lift up face saying you are happy, gloomy faces make people look sad, raising eyebrows signifying questioning or suspecting or being fed up,etc.) Eye expression ( rolling up eyes implying fed up or tired or not interested, open up wide eyes conveys fear or surprise, etc. direct eye contact implies confidence, ignoring eye contact may resemble being ignorant or embarrasement or showing respect or lieing etc.), posture (standing straight showing respect, attention, leaning towards someone showing friendliness, interest; etc.)
2) Para language (body movements) : how one move his whole body or part of his body in relation to whole body also comunicates a number of things. Such as moving here and there fastly may show anxiety, stress, waiting, nervousness, keenness etc. waiving hand may show saying hi/goodbye, showing palm may ask for stopping, smiling represents freindliness.happiness etc.
3) Proxemics - space language: how close one person is standing or sitting represents the kind of relatiosnhip between the perosns communiacating. For example two freinds will stand or sit in imost closedl loop. T=one teacher and student will stand from each other slight far away. The more the distance the more formal relationship is.
Through non verbal communication one may get feedback, may get signs of other messages that cant be expressed, may get surity whther he has been heard etc. For eg nodding shows other person is listening and giving feedback. It gives conformity to what is being communicated verbally and sometimes contradict it. For example if a teacher is saying while giving lecture that he has enough time to explain a matter but constantly look at his writs watch implies he is getting late so this in contradict of what he was saying.
