Discuss whether you think the following scenario is ethical or not? Please answer the following 3 questions in your original response. Following the original response, you may respond to other classmates (please see the rubric for grading discussions.

You are a recent graduate of one of the programs in CCSE, but you are having trouble getting a job. You actually prepared a very professional resume and have placed it on several Web Sites, and directly to several company HR sites in your city. You haven't gotten any responses from your resumes. You know that one of your shortcomings is that you have no real job experience. You are considering beefing up your resume by exaggerating the extent to which your capstone project was work experience. The project was actually a small project for a local web development company. You could reword your resume to make it sound like you were actually working for the company, and that your responsibilities were actually greater than they were.

Questions:

1. Do you see any ethical problem here - if so what is it?

2. Do you see any illegal problem here?

3. Do you think that this really isn't a problem, and that it should help you get a job.

Explanation / Answer

Lying on your resume or exaggerating it is definitely an ethical problem, to a point where it risks the employer terminating or receding the job offer. Even if that doesn’t happen, you lose a far more important thing about yourself, your integrity. Interviewers hire people that are dependable in such situations where many lie and damage their reputation and risk coming out as untrustworthy and dishonest. Ethics are valued and much as a person’s competence and lying on a resume damages just and creare irreparable consequences.

From a legal standpoint, A company that hired you based upon your false pretenses can just as easily terminate your job opportunity or cut your salary. In some states, you even have to face criminal charges against falsified or embellished resume data. In situation where you want to sue your employer for a breach in your rights, a falsified resume, no matter how small that information may be can come back and bite you and risks your chances in a lawsuit.

Padding your resume or straightaway lying about your experience or qualification can get you a job but when you’re caught, and you will be, the consequences are dire. It is a problem, both ethically and legally, where some people think they can efficiently lie and not get caught. It might not be a problem initially but imagine when your employer can fire you for any or no reason at will, this just gives them a motive to do so. You just handed them a loaded gun pointed straight at you.
