All of these content forms make up multimedia, which is usually accessed through electronic devices, such as the computer or tablet you are using now. The term goes all the way back to 1966, when it was used by the singer and artist Bob Goldstein.

What do you know about this growing form of media? What is the difference between linear and nonlinear multimedia? Discuss d you know that performances of multimedia can be live, like a presentation, or recorded, like a web page? How has multimedia helped the growth of online education programs? What is hypermedia and how does it relate to multimedia?

Multimedia is a medium of expression or communication that represents the interaction of computers and devices that integrates a presentation medium like audio, video , texts and interactive content.

There are two distinct type of multimedia which are linear and nonlinear with basic difference being the factor of human interaction with it.

LINEAR MULTIMEDIA

Linear multimedia is a form of media where there is no interaction from the viewer and does not require our input. Examples include a youtube video, an anime, a powerpoint presentation, a movie etc.

NONLINEAR MEDIA

Nonlinear media is a form of media where there is interaction from the viewer and requires the viewers input to work. Examples includes things like a movie DVD which requires the viewer’s input for selection, a website or a search engine homepage. Nonlinear media requires a level of technical competency and literacy by the user.

We can say that the performance of multimedia can be live like a presentation or recorded like web pages because it corresponds to the two type of multimedia and is presented in different forms to us.

Multimedia has helped the growth of online education programs. What was a selective step in the pursuit of knowledge is now freely accessible and out there. Multimedia has revolutionized education in a sense that it created a level of viewership and involvement that traditional forms of education couldn’t provide. It required user input and captured their attention, being an important part of learning and experimenting.

Hypermedia is a specific form of nonlinear medium of information like graphics and which are converted to the form of text and viewed by the user. In a general sense there are several similarities between multimedia and hypermedia with the main difference being that multimedia means multiple forms of media and hypermedia refers to hypertext form of multimedia. Multimedia can contain hypermedia but the other is not the case.
