A career in healthcare information technology requires a person with a diverse skill set, especially in the field of technology and information systems. The trends require skills in the region of advanced database management, privacy and security, clinical practice, and assessing the needs of technology and negotiating the contracts between interested prospects. An ingenuity in problem solving techniques, combined with the dexterity and growing with the job is also one of the things that is expected.

The skills requirements keep changing constantly but these skills have managed to remain unchanged from an early aspect :-

DATABASE MANAGEMENT

People need more than just the basic skills in database management softwares like excel and SQL and need to be proficient in indexing, search and removing duplicates.

TROUBLESHOOTING SKILLS

An error could occur at any point of time by things like user error, equipment error, network problem and database error and a person needs to be competent to deal with it effectively. Not only does this require software skills but knowledge about different hardware in the healthcare industry is necessary too.

KNOWLEDGE OF HEALTHCARE SYSTEM INTERFACE

A skill level is expected from a person to be able to operate and fully appreciate a healthcare interface and interface engines. They should not only be proficient in using it but programming knowledge to be able to further develop its core functionality is also a huge help.

CERTIFICATION

This is a simple argument where it can be assumed that the better your skill level and certification are, the better chances and options you get in an industry which is ever growing and competitive in it’s dealing.

The current workforce of professionals include the skills in the area of database management, SQL language, Expertise in at least one programming language and analytical software and management skills.

When i consider the requirements to enter this field i can safely say that by self reflection i know that i need to work on my programming skills in general and my management skills. I need to be able to educate myself and develop a knack for problem solving and troubleshooting as well. I am already proficient with database entry and indexing and analytic softwares.
