Question

PA 3-3 Consider a process consisting of three... Consider a process consisting of three resources. Assume there exists unlimited demand for the product. Resource 1 has a processing time of 2 minutes per unit. Resource 2 has a processing time of 6 minutes per unit. Resource 3 has a processing time of 4 minutes per unit. Resource 1 Resource2 Resource 3 All three resources are staffed by one worker. The flow diagram is shown above. Round "Capacity of resource" to 3 decimal places and other numbers to whole numbers a. What is the capacity of resource 2? b. What is the bottleneck in the process? c. What is the utilization of resource 2? 0.166 units per minute 2 Resource 3 percent How long does it take the process to produce 182 units starting with an empty system, assuming this is a worker-paced process? d 1,096 minutes

Explanation / Answer

Processing time of resource 1 : 2 minutes per unit

Processing time of resource 2 : 6 minutes per unit

Processing time of resource 3 : 4 minutes per unit

Since resource 2 has the maximum processing time per unit , it is the Bottleneck” resource

Capacity of the Resource 2 ( @ 6 minutes per unit ) = 1/6 units per minute = 0.166 units per minute

Since Resource 2 is the Bottleneck resource, its utilization would be 100%

When starting with an empty system , amount of time it takes for the first unit to reach to the end of Resource 3

= Cumulative processing time of Resource 1, Resource 2 and resource 3

= 2 + 6 + 4

= 12 minutes

Time taken to produce 182 units starting with an empty system

= 12 minutes + Capacity of the bottleneck resource x 182 units

= 12 minutes + 6 minutes/ unit x 182

= 12 + 1092 minutes

= 1104 minutes
