1. The most important development in globalization that is the most important is the rise of both megafirms as well as internet enabled minifirms both at the same time across the world. Things are getting bigger and smaller both at the same time due to electronic information and this will make scenarios difficult for new companies. To be relevant companies will have to be both local as well as global, both at the same time, to be relevant to the customers.
2. Currently tariff barriers to international trade are being implemented in an aggressive manner. USA, under the leadership of Donald Trump, has put tariffs on China’s goods. All Chinese imports to USA will now face a 25 percent border tax. This is being done to penalize China for its controversial trade practices.
3. The most important cultural area that international managers have to deal with in cross-border business is the area of ‘uncertainty avoidance’. This is because different countries and cultures have different levels of tolerance for uncertainty and ambiguity. Countries with strong uncertainty avoidance have rigid codes of beliefs and are intolerant of unorthodox ideas and behavior. As such managers will have to ensure that their products and services do not offend the orthodox sensibilities of consumers in such countries.
4. My SMART goal – I will acquire four new clients for my consulting business during the next quarter and this will be done by asking for referrals and doing networking. These steps will allow me to increase my revenue on a sustainable basis.
