Question
The internet is changing views on privacy. Individuals may not realize the implications of uploading data to social sites, where privacy is sometimes lost, such as Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. In 2014, personal pictures of celebrities that were meant to be private were hacked from the celebrities’ own storage in Apple’s iCloud service and posted on sites accessible around the world (CBS News, 2014). There are laws protecting certain kinds of information; however, prosecuting or bringing the hacker to justice could be very difficult. The hacker could be next door or across the globe, beyond the jurisdiction of U.S. law.
Discuss the pros and cons of extensive government regulation of the internet, either by a local sovereign government or by an international body specifically constituted for this purpose. Cite a specific example in support of extensive government regulation and one example against government regulation.
Explanation / Answer
Starting with the most recent event, where some ransome hckers hacked 1.5TB of data from HBO and realeases many of the GOT S7 episodes. The extent to which government regulation impacts the Internet sector depends on the country and the degree of regulation. Governments around the world regulate various aspects of Internet content, such as child pornography, defamation and information sensitive to national security. Many people find it difficult to run a successful business with such harsh regulations. It can be difficult to follow one government regulation with out breaking another. The invisible hand is a metaphor to describe self regulation which means that we cannot depend on the internet and related IT bodies to regulate itself. So that's where government regulation comes in. The cons of having the government involved are that they aren't conscious or understanding of they bodies they try to regulate. In addition they also seem to be inefficient specifically naming the bureaucracies. Another con is that they can be easily influenced by those they try to regulate. Another con is that they have no control over those outside it's jurisdiction. A pro of government intervention is you are able to gain some sort of regulation for some of the unwanted information you may face such as spam.
Example in support of extensive government regulation:-
ICANN is a not profit organization the fully controls DNS or Domain Name System. It determines the policies for domain name distribution and it has the final say for selecting firms that qualify as registrars.
Example against government regulation(My opinion, your's can be different):-
The city of Philadelphia now requires all bloggers to purchase a $300 business privilege license. The city even went after one poor woman who had earned only $11 from her blog over the past two years.
