Question

Create a single NOTEPAD or PDF file that restates the problem in your own words, specifies what input is needed from whomever is using the process, what output is expected, the step by step process (algorithm) to get the output from the input, and test data (input for which you know the expected output for each of the 3 problems given below. (Include all this information in one file) You should not write any code.

The owners of a mall need to know when a parking lot will flood based on the rate rainfall. This lot is has one sewer drain. Develop a process that will take the ask the user the size of the lot in square feet, the rain fall in inches per hour, the flow rate of the sewer in feet per second, and the cross section of the sewer pipe in square feet. When the amount of water accumulating by the rain is greater than the amount that can be removed by the drain output a message that the lot should be evacuated, otherwise output a message that the cars are safe.

Answer should be in this format:

Purpose:

Input Needed:

Output Expected:

Algorithm:

Test Data:

Explanation / Answer

Purpose: To determine whether the lot is safe to park cars or not.

Inputs Needed : Size of lot (square feet) , rainfall rate(inches per hour) , cross section of sewer pipe(square feet),flow rate of pipe(feet per second)

Output Expected : Yes(safe) No (Unsafe)

Algorithm:

1) Convert rainfall rate into feet per hour by dividing it by 12.

2) Multiply rainfall rate(in feet per hour ) by square footage of the lot to obtain the volume of rain water that enters the lot per hour (in feet3).

3) Multiply area of cross section of pipe(feet2) by flow rate*3600(flow rate in hours) to determine the amount of water that is taken out by the sewer.

4) Subtract the volume of water that is taken out of the lot from the water that enters the lot.

5) If the value is positive then the lot is unsafe. otherwise its safe.

Test Data:

Case 1:

Size of lot (square feet) =200

rainfall rate(inches per hour) =120

rainfall rate(feet per hour) =10

Total water entering lot(feet3)=2000

cross section of sewer pipe(square feet)= 1

flow rate of pipe(feet per second)= 0.5

flow rate of pipe(feet per hour)= 0.5*3600 = 1800

water exiting the lot = 1*1800=1800

water entering - exiting = 2000-1800=200

unsafe

Case 2:

Size of lot (square feet) =200

rainfall rate(inches per hour) =12

rainfall rate(feet per hour) =1

Total water entering lot(feet3)=200

cross section of sewer pipe(square feet)= 0.1

flow rate of pipe(feet per second)= 0.5

flow rate of pipe(feet per hour)= 0.5*3600= 1800

water exiting the lot = 0.1*1800

water entering - exiting = 200-180=20 (positive)

unsafe

Case 3:

Size of lot (square feet) =200

rainfall rate(inches per hour) =12

rainfall rate(feet per hour) =1

Total water entering lot(feet3)=200

cross section of sewer pipe(square feet)= 0.1

flow rate of pipe(feet per second)= 0.6

flow rate of pipe(feet per hour)= 0.6*3600=2160

water exiting the lot = 0.1*2160 = 216

water entering - exiting = 200-216= -16 (negative)

safe
