Question
P3. Consider an application that transmits data at a steady rate (for example, the sender generates an N-bit unit of data every k time units, where k is small and fixed). Also, when such an application starts, it will continue running for a relatively long period of time. Answer the following questions, briefly justi- fying your answer a. Would a packet-switched network or a circuit-switched network be more appropriate for this application? Why? b. Suppose that a packet-switched network is used and the only traffic in this network comes from such applications as described above. Further- more, assume that the sum of the application data rates is less than the capacities of each and every link. Is some form of congestion control needed? Why?Explanation / Answer
a) In the given application the N bits of data is transferred in k time which is set and constant , the application transfers the data for a lengthy duration of time , Hence circuit switched network is proper to use for the application which ensures that the application runs without any interruption . There will be no waste in bandwidth because Transmission rate is known , And the cost of adding or removing of connections is reduced because of long duration of the application run.
b) If Packet switched network is used there wont be need of Congestion control mechanism because Every link consists of large capacities and application can simultaneously transfer data through one or more links and there is enough bandwidth and the data rates are also less , Hence a little queue may be formed but Congestion will not be formed .
