Question
The dashed lines in the diagram represent cross sections of equipotential surfaces drawn in 1 V increments.(Figure 1)
Part A: What is the work WAB done by the electric force to move a 1 C charge from A to B?
Part B: What is the work WAD done by the electric force to move a 1 C charge from A to D?
Part C: The magnitude of the electric field at point C is
A. greater than the magnitude of the electric field at point B.
B. less than the magnitude of the electric field at point B.
C. equal to the magnitude of the electric field at point B.
D. unknown because the value of the electric potential at point C is unknown.
Explanation / Answer
A: Work done is 0, since Wab = q*(V2 - V1), electric potential at both the points is same (V2-V1) = 0 .
B: "V2-V1=1V" q= 1C ... Wab=1V (it will be positive as electric field will try to push the charge from higher potential to lower potential)
C: OPTION A ...Since electric field is negative gradient of electric potential, i.e electric field is higher where equipotential lines are closer(denser) as compared to points where they are not closer.
