Question

A velocity selector having uniform perpendicular electric and magnetic fields is shown in the figure (Figure 1) . The electric field is provided by a 150V DC battery connected across two large parallel metal plates that are 4.50cm apart.

1)What must be the magnitude of the magnetic field so that charges having a velocity of 3.10

km/sperpendicular to the fields will pass through undeflected?

2)Show how the magnetic field should point in the region between the plates. (Using Words)

Please explain answers FULLY, I'm looking to undertand WHY.

Explanation / Answer

Magnitude of electric field E = V / d

where V = potential difference between two plates = 150V

d = separation bnetween two plates = 4.5 cm = 0.045 m

So , E = 3333.33 V / m

( A ) . velocity of the particle v = 3.1 km / s = 3100 m/ s

E/ B = 3100 m / s

? magnitude of the magnetic field B =E / 3100 m / s

= 1.075 T

( B ) . Magnetic field is perpendicular to both electricfield and velocity of the particle
