Explanation / Answer

(A) Potential Difference

Let q0 be the charge on capacitor C1 initially ,

Charge stored , q0 = C1V0

Now , C1 and C2 are connected in parallel , Let q1 and q2 be th charge stored on capacitor C1 and C2 respectivly.

Let V be the potential difference across each capacitor ,

q0 = q1 + q2

=> C1V0 = C1V + C2V

=> V = (C1V0) / (C1+C2) (Answer)

(B) Total energy stored ,

Initial energy stored is given by ,

U0 = (1/2)* C1* V0^2

Final energy stored is given by ,

U = (1/2)*C1*V^2 + (1/2)*C2*V^2

=> U = (1/2)*(C1+C2)*V^2 (Answer)
