Question

Simplicio and Salviati made the following statements about the circuit shown below. Some were made by Salviati and are thus credible... but some where made by Simplicio. Validate or refute each statement, explaining why it is true or false. All that is known is that resistance Ri, and C is come capacitance.

Please explain in full detail to get all points.

(a) "The circuit could be drawn like this":

(b) "The total resistance of the circuit is given by this":

(c) "No matter how large Rj, Rk, Rl, Rm, and Rn are, it is not possible for their total resistance to be greater than Rj"

(d) "When the battery is connected , charges begin moving at its negative terminal and then migrated through the circuit, toward its positive terminal."

(e) "None of the charges that leave the battery will ever return to it"

(f) "In order for energy to be consered, at any time, the voltages across series and parallel combinations of resistors must add up to the battery's voltage."

Rn Ri Ri

Explanation / Answer

a) false since in the given reduced figure 5 resistors are in parallel. but in te problem circuit Rn ,Rm are parallel which is in series withh Rl

b)false since Rl is in series with Rn || Rm but in equation it is shown that they are parallel to each other

c)false as Ri is in series with rest of the circuit. Req > Ri

d)true since initially the capacitor offers a huge resistance, current will flow opposite to capacitor side that is through negative terminal

e)true charge will be stored in capacitor

f)false because capacitor too will have some potential difference
