Question

3 Sheets of conductors P1, P2, P3, all normal to Z-axis at Z= 1.2x10^-6, 0, and -1.2x10^-6 respectively. All three sheets are in a shape of a rectangle with dimensions 3x4 mm^2 that lay on top of each other. The gaps between the sheets are filled with dielectric with epsilon-r = 100.

a) If a voltage of 20v is applied to P1 and P3 is grounded and P2 is not connected to anything. Calculate E,Q,C and energy stored in the capacitor where E is the electric field intensity, Q is the total charge, and C is the capacitance.

b) If the voltage of 20v is applied to P2. P1 and P3 is connected to ground. Calculate E, Q, and C.

Please provide all steps and equations for each part.

Explanation / Answer

a)

C = k e0 A/d = 100*8.85e-12*(3e-3*4e-3)/(2*1.2e-6) = 4.425e-9 F = 4.425 x 10^-9 F

Q = C V = 4.425e-9 * 20 = 8.85 x 10^-8 C

E = V/d = 20/(2*1.2e-6) = 8.33 x 10^6 N/C

U = energy = 0.5 C V^2 = 0.5 * 4.425e-9 * (20*20) = 8.85 x 10^-7 J

b)

C = 2 k e0 A/d = 2*100*8.85e-12*(3e-3*4e-3)/(1.2e-6) = 1.77e-8 F = 1.77 x 10^-8 F

Q = C V = 1.77e-8 * 20 = 3.54 x 10^-7 C

E = V/d = 20/(1.2e-6) = 1.67 x 10^7 N/C

U = energy = 0.5 C V^2 = 0.5 * 1.77e-8 * (20*20) = 3.54 x 10^-6 J
