A simple particle accelerator: One of the first circular particle accelerator designs is known as a cyclotron. This type of accelerator is still often used in hospitals to generate the high energy particles needed for particle therapy. The first cyclotron was invented in 1932 by Ernest Lawrence (Lawrence Berkeley National Lab) was 4in across and is shown in Figure 2 l2l. The basic outline of the design is shown in Figure 3. It is comprised of two regions of uniform magnetic field of magnitude B called "dees" with a difference in electric potential between them. The electric potential difference can be thought of as being generated by a pair of capacitors (shown in red in the diagram) with a tiny gap in them through which the particle being accelerated can pass. As a simplification, you may assume for this problem that there is no magnetic field between the "dees". A particle of charge + q and mass m is released from rest at the point shown and goes around and around picking up speed with each revolution.
Explanation / Answer
4.The cyclotron uses electric and magnetic fields. The whole accelerator is in a uniform magnetic field. Charged particles moving in the field feel a force acting at 90o to their direction of motion, so they move in circles
