Question
Two kids make a "phone" consisting of a pair of tin cans connected by a piece of string. When one shouts into one can it makes the string vibrate which transmits those vibrations to the other can where they are converted back into faint sound waves. The cans are strung between their bedrooms such that the tension is 65.4 N and the length of the string is 10.3 m. If the string has a total mass of 1.2 kg how long after the first kid shouts into their can will the second kid hear him assuming that the "phone" is the only means of transmission.
Explanation / Answer
Apply v = sqrt(T/u)
Are you sure the mass is 1.2 kg, thats some heavy string, but here is the calculation for that value you have entered
u = mass per unit length = 1.2/10.3 = .1165
v = sqrt (65.4/.1165)
v = 23.7 m/s
Now d = vt
10.3 = 23.7(t)
t = .435 sec
If the mass is typed in wrong, please let me know and I can help resolve if needed.
