Question

Need your help please do not use picture if it is not more than clear

A 1 135.0 kg car traveling initially with a speed of 25.000 m/s in an easterly direction crashes into the back of a 9 300.0 kg truck moving in the same direction at 20.000 m/s. The velocity of the car right after the collision is 18.000 m/s to the east. What is the velocity of the truck right after the collision? (Give your answer to five significant figures.) What is the change in mechanical energy of the car-truck system in the collision? Account for this change in mechanical energy.

Explanation / Answer

Using conservation of linear momentum

m1v1 + m2v2 = m1v3 + m2v4

1135 * 25 + 9300*20 = 1135*18 + 9300*v4

v4 = 20.85430 m/s

b) Change in mechanical energy = Change in K.E.

0.5* 1135*(18^2 - 25^2) + 0.5 * 9300* ( 20.85^2 - 20^2) = - 8523.9975J

Mechanical energy is lost in the form of heat energy and plastic deformation that takes place during collision.
