Write a reply to this:

“A crime is and offense that tends to injure society as a whole.” (p. 7, Ashcroft) These types of issues are dealt with in criminal courts. They range in severity from misdemeanor to felony and can be punishable from fines to serious jail time. Ethics are “principles that help a person determine the morality of conduct, its motives, and its duties.” (p8, Ashcroft) People usually develop values form our culture, background. Religious beliefs, and experiences these values help us determine or judge if actions are ethical. Laws set a particular standard for people to follow but ethics raise that standard to a higher level. Something can be unethical without being criminal. We see this happen particularly in business, for instance, if a business knows it has employees whose performance is of poor quality but sends them out on jobs anyway while charging the customer for a higher quality of work this could be considered unethical but not really criminal. Customers will see the quality of work and not call on them again. “A tort is a private or civil wrong or injury for which there may be an action for damages. A tort may be intentional, or it may be caused by negligence.” (p. 21, Ashcroft). This section of law is what allows a person to sue for damages if they have been hurt or suffered from wrong doing. Like a crime it could result from certain unethical behavior. If a manufacturer releases a product knowing it is defective and that product results in someone being injured the manufacture could be found liable. Ashcrof, J. D., Ashcroft, K. M., Patterson, M. Explanation / Answer

Generally crimes are governed by criminal legal laws and regulations based on which the severity and impact of a crime can be determined and depending on this severity of the impact, the punishment for the crime and what type of crime it is can be ascertained. For example, there are torts, misdemeanor and felony as well which are punished based on the judgement forwarded by the criminal court.

Ethics on the other hand is the ability of understanding the right and wrong based on values and morals and there may be actions which are legal but not ethical as morally it may be wrong. There is a basic difference between crime and unethical activities as crime is regulated by law but ethics is regulated by the values present. I would strongly agree with the post here because I believe that ethics and crime possess some fundamental differences between them.
