Question
Assignment Compare TWO grocery stores within a few miles of each other in your local neighborhood. These are two companies competing in the same business in the exact same market. What do you notice that is different, what is similar? How do you think Supply and Demand affect their pricing? Thinking about the Global Business Environment, how does it affect these two stores? (Just select one or two environments in your text and lesson and relate to your business) .Looking at the definition of management: PLANNING, LEADING, CONTROLLING and ORGANIZING, described what you saw in either store that demonstrates at least two of these items.Explanation / Answer
The Chosen Stores are:
•Store A (SPD Market)
•Store B (Raileys)
Store A
Store B
SPD is locally owned and has a lot of locally owned products from local vendors.
Has a bigger selection of frozen and ready to eat foods.
Prices are higher yet food is fresher and stocked full more often.
Food is still fresh but comes from all over the country so you never know how long it has been in transit.
Most employees know you by name and know what you usually order at the meat counter or even in the deli.
Not really on a first name basis, lots of conversion between employees.
Similarities:-
Store A
Store B
They stock organics and non organics, but the main focus is farm to table style.
Stock organics from more vendors from around the country.
Quality meats and deli foods.
Same quality around the same price but more variety.
Store A are easy to navigate and everything is labelled correctly.
Store B is bigger and a bit more difficult to navigate and find things but labels are clear and easy to follow.
Effect of Supply and Demand:-
Store A
Store B
Smaller store with smaller farmers and local business contracts making for higher prices.
Has more contracts so they stock more foods.
Prices are a bit higher in this store, but worth the experience.
Prices are pretty competitive but still cheaper than Store A.
Being more local I feel that Store A does increase their prices to accommodate the employee wages and getting product in stock.
Having the ability to reach far and wide beyond Store A, they can afford to lessen the prices based that they can find the best deal from them.
Global Business Environment:-
Store A
Store B
Still uses an older system which limits the speed at which people check out. Also no self check out.
Store B is on the bigger end of the technology scale with self automated machines and newer computers to help ring out customer faster.
Another area affected is scales and other machinery that help customers
Having the latest and greatest really helps the company with customer experience and speed.
Store A also accepts apple and android pay which is their newest feature which is quite helpful especially I tend to leave my wallet at home when I am in a hurry.
You can actually order your groceries online like Safeways just for u program, which is helpful because you can just arrive and pick up and go!
Answer:-
Store A
Store B
Store A had a better leadership based on the management being very on point and taking care of customer needs very quickly, with a smaller chain of command things get handled faster.
In Store B, since it is a bigger company with many stores within the western hemisphere, so leadership can be quite difficult meaning trying to handle escalations.
Organizing is a lot better in Store A due to the small size of the location and having the ability of less inventory to manage.
Store B has more inventory and not enough employees to handle the amount of time needed to rightfully stock the store fully and with quality, sometimes products are miss-placed into areas that are not right for the product.
With employee organization there is also an advantage knowing the product locals way better almost to the T.
Employees send more time looking for a product so they can best help you, so in the end you really don’t even want to ask where something is located.
