He has no idea about it, so if you go about describing how RDB actually works( i.e., technically), he will not be interested. Just mention in the report the improvements you can bring to the project with RDB. Use fugures and numbers and yes, the advantages of RDB. So, advantages of using RDB is an important part of the answer but is not the answer itself. You can adopt this methodolgy:

-- What RDB is, in layman's terms. Again, do not use technical jargons.

-- Advantages of RDB and how it can be applied to the current problem. Use numbers, graphs, charts to convince the manager.

-- Use a couple of real life examples as also suggested in the question.
