Compare the duties of Private and Public Security Professionals. List at least five duties Private and Public (Law Enforcement) each perform. Provide examples of duties Private Security professionals are able to do without the same constraints as Public Security. Do you think the differences are advantageous for Private Security Professionals or creates additional challenges? Briefly describe the reasons for your opinion. Example, in your readings you’ll see Private Security professionals are not always required to give Miranda warnings when someone is detained. Briefly explain why Private Security would not have to provide a rights warning.

Explanation / Answer

The Police, sheriffs and detectives mainly make up the public security professionals, whereas private security guards are hired by businesses or individuals to guard and protect properties like gated communities, shopping complexes or workplaces.

Some duties performed by a Pubic Security Professional would be:

1.       Work towards making the society as crime-free as possible. Arresting criminals and bringing them to the court of justice.

2.       Write a speeding ticket.

3.       Use force to instill any law abidance and disobedience of public laws and standards

4.       Security of Government officials and dignitaries.

5.       Provide training at police training schools for the future batches.

Duties of Private Security Professional would be:

1.       Protection of Private Property in the form of Malls, Housing Complexes etc.

2.       Protection of High net-worth individuals who need security.

3.       Break strikes and revolts at private factories and units.

4.       Protection of Cash carrying vans of all banks

5.       If hired, private security professionals also protect government buildings or individuals

I do not think the differences are advantageous for private security professionals instead are an additional challenge. Both private and public security professionals can use unnecessary force, however private professionals work for their employers and can often have a conflict of interest with the society and public officers at large. Private security is not regulated that well and in most cases do not have any minimum requirement of education or training. Despite this, many of them do carry arms which in turn could be dangerous for the citizens in the society. The objective given to the private professional is clearly defined, like it could be to protect a specific rich individual. Hence, the professional can go to any extent to do so which at times could be unethical.
