2. Consider two hosts, A and B, connected by a single link of rate R bps. Suppose that the two hosts are separated by m meters, and suppose the propagation speed along the link is s meters/sec. Host A is to send a packet of size L bits to Host B. Express the propagation delay, dprop, in term of m and s Determine the transmission time of the packet, drans, in terms of L and R. Ignoring processing and queuing delays, obtain an expression for the end- a. b. c. to-end delay. d. Suppose dprop is greater than drans , At time dran, where is the first bit of the packet? Suppose s-2.5x108, L-120bits, and R-56 kbps. Find the distance m so that dprop equals drans e.Explanation / Answer
2.
a. dprop = (m meters)/ (s meteres/sec) = m/s sec
b. dtrans = (L bits)/ (R bits/sec) =L/R sec
c. The last bit gets pushed out of A’s interface in R/L sec and this bit takes m/s sec to
reach B. Therefore the total end-to-end delay is :-
(R/L + m/s) sec
d. The first bit is in the link and has not reached Host B.
e. The distance,
m = (L/R)*s =(120/56*103)*(2.5*108) = 535714.2857 or 535.7 km
