Question

For example, Jenna, a healthcare administration leader, determined last week that patient satisfaction scores had fallen from the mean of 87. She wants to know why. She believes that it may have something to do with patient waiting time and time spent with the doctor. Thus, her dependent variable (y) is patient satisfaction and the independent variables are waiting time (x1) and time spent with the doctor (x2). She can evaluate the relationship between these two variables using correlation; bivariate scatterplots for y vs. x1 and y vs. x2; and regression techniques.

When thinking about a healthcare scenario where multiple regression might be useful in your organization or one with which you are familiar. Consider what your dependent and independent variables might be for conducting a multiple regression analysis. Build a small example, and run the regression anal

Could show me a description of the dependent and independent variables you will use for your multiple regression analysis, and then explain your regression model in terms of your dependent and independent variables. Explain how you might measure your variables. Be specific and provide examples.

Explanation / Answer

Regression analysis is a technique that helps to determine the influence of one or more variable called independent variable on another variable called dependent variable.

In context of health care industry, let us assume the management of a hospital wants to know what measures it could take to provide high customer satisfaction through improving quality of services it offers to patients. The management believes that satisfied patient will revisit the hospital in case it faces a medical service requirement in future. Also the managements assumes that patients and their family ,if feels satisfied with quality of services offered they may spread positive word of mouth about the hospital, an important aspect of marketing program run at hospital.

With this in mind the hospital takes help of a research agency which comes out with this research plan.

And Dependent variable

Patient satisfaction (PS)

5. Now we have clearly indentified dependent variable (Patient satisfaction) and independent variables( Simplicity of registration process, Adequacy of doctors expertise and Cost of treatment)

6. The regression model will be as follows:

PS = a + b1SR + b2 AE + b3 CT + e

Where b1 , b2 and b3 are coefficient if independent variables, ‘ a’ is the constant (the intercept on X axis, value of PS when value of all SR, AE and CT is zero) and e is the error term. bi   means change in PS when one unit change occurs in independent variables. The b1 values are important as they explain quantum of influence of independent variables on dependent variable. Higher the coefficient value more critical will be the independent variable.

7. In order to measure the dependent and independent variables it is required to develop scales comprising of multiple items/ statement. Data could be obtained by asking to customers of hospital to rate the statements on 5 point scale. An illustrative example could be as follows:

Patient satisfaction

Simplicity of registration process (SR)

Adequacy of doctor’s expertise (AE)

Cost of treatment (CT)

        Each of the above statements to rated on 5 point scale by patients already experienced the services.
