In Information security authentication and authorization are used to provide security on automated information systems. The identity of the person is given by authentication and authorization checks the acccess list (i.e., permissions) of the particular person.

For example:

In banking applications if a person is logging into it, then identity of user is checked using userid and password which is nothing but authentication. The admin decides the privelages and rights that the user has which is authorization. So, Authorization is done only after the authentication.
