Question
A search of the web will find the following text in many published employee handbooks: ["Possession of weapons is prohibited on company property and while on duty performing company business at any location. Any employee on duty or on company premises in possession of a weapon will be subject to appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including termination. Report any weapon possession to your direct supervisor, a member of the Human Resources department, or a member of the Executive Team. Weapons are generally defined as guns, knives, and other objects, universally considered a weapon by the vast majority of society. A “weapon” also can be any object which would do harm to another when used as such. This organization shall deem any such object a “weapon” for the purpose of enforcing this policy."] Recognizing how frequently the above paragraphs are used within published employee handbooks, do you think the above text clearly communicates the organizations’ intent without any risk of misinterpretation or can it be misinterpreted
Explanation / Answer
The above text is quite common in many employee's handbook of many well established
companies. The paragaph is perfectly fine as it clearly states what is a weapon, whom
to report and incase of not authorized to posses it what can happen. The office premises
is not meant to have "weapons" as described in the paragraph unless and untill there
is a valid reason as autthorized by the company policies. There are always tensions in the
work place and sometime under extreme conditions , an employee can just use it take
out his/her anger or dissatisfaction due to frustration which will be a very unfotunate
thing to happen inside the company. There is absolutly no scope of misinterpretation in
a very common way as everybody knows in genral what a weapon is but sometimes there
can be confusion for e.g if somebody wants to keep a small knife for general purpose
thing like cutting fruits etc or may be some other sharp object. But such confusions will
be rare and can be taken care of with simple queries. The mentiones paragarph is fully apporopriate and practically no room for misinterpretation.
