Wal-Mart has used diversity to overcome the adversity and groups that fight them. Earlier Wal-Mart was accused of discrimination at the workplace by certain groups. In order to overcome this accusation, Wal-Mart currently employs more than 1.5 million associates with a mix of African American (22%), Hispanic (14%), Asian American (4%), native Hawaiian (1%) and American Indian (1%). Gender discrimination is overcome by employing 55% women comprising 43% as managers and 31% as officers. In this manner, Wal-Mart has overcome its issues by managing a diverse workforce.
Wal-Mart is currently expanding its associate network worldwide. The integrity of values remains its core strategy in global operations. The 2.3 million associate base of Wal-Mart catering a diverse customer base is the major strength of Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart is progressing rapidly through joint ventures, acquisitions and takeovers with an investment of more than $2.7 billion in two years. Currently, Wal-Mart is focusing on entering Indian markets by purchasing Flipkart.
Ethics is given emphasis by including the moral principle of servicing the customer with respect in its core values. Wal-Mart ensures that the customers are serviced in an individual manner. The company treats each individual with respect and has included this principle in its core values. Wal-Mart has passed these values to its associates to respect, understand and value diversity. These ethical values also have a positive impact on the community with the associates of Wal-Mart being the agents in their local communities. Wal-Mart carries forward and reflects the diversity existing in the American Society in a positive manner encouraging collaboration among customers, associates, neighbors and the community as a whole. This makes Wal-Mart a better place to work and shop.
The culture of Wal-Mart includes strive for excellence, service to the customer, act with integrity and respect for the individual as its core values and imbibes these values in the daily behavior. The main aim of these values is to build an inclusive culture. Wal-Mart has been successful in developing this culture over the years and training the associates on this value system. This integrity aspect of value helps Wal-Mart to fit into international markets by valuing diversity and developing a diverse team of the workforce.
Wal-Mart stays ahead of the competition by valuing diversity and building an inclusive culture. Wal-Mart has invested $2.7 billion in educating and training its associates in the core values and successfully built diverse work teams with added responsibilities. The company uses this value system of the diverse management board to select the strong leaders of the future from within the company.
