The basic principle in rise of price for a commodity can be attributed to supply demand scenario of the market. The same can be experienced in different industries.
The Education and Health services sectors are necessary for our wellbeing. However we also need to remember that there are many educators and health practitioners available. This helps in keeping the market of employment balanced in this industry. Being a teacher, lecturer, doctor, or nurse has become nearly a commoditized employment and are driven by market. Considering that there is a large demand and large supply of these skills, the forces eventually balance. However, the same cannot be said about the film industry.
In the film industry, the number of actors are far less than that of number of doctors or teachers available in the country. In addition to that the actors’ skills are much more niche. They not only require to know how to act but they are also often weighed by their brand value. This causes an individual to become a global/national brand. This is usually not the same with the doctors or teachers. Now if we consider the market demand for such actors, we see that the film industry is extremely widespread and has a global market. While it does not surpass the medical or education industry, the demand for the skill of a branded actor and the availability is much more skewed than that of education or health industry.
Naturally, this makes an actor of Robert Downey Jr.’s stature very prominent and in high demand than availability. Thus the price of his services shoot up multifold. This is why the actors and actresses earn so much more money compared to chosen labor group.
