Question
A clinic is seeking ways to reduce the theoretical flow time of a typical patient visit. The typical flow times for various activities are shown below: Flow Time (in minutes) Activity Check-In Measure Blood Pressure Measure Patient Height and Weight Physician Exam Checkout Total Activity Time 4 4 15 34 minutes Currently, each patient currently goes through each of the five activities exactly once and hence the flow time of the process is 34 minutes. What would be the new flow time of the process (in minutes) if only patients who have not visited in the past year were measured for height and weight? Assume 60% of patients will require their height and weight to be measured under the new policy. Enter your answer in minutes and round to the nearest tenth of a minute (e.g. 47.2 minutes)Explanation / Answer
There will now be two types of flow time depending on whether the patients have visited past year or not.
If patients have not visited past year :
Flow time
= Sum of 5 activity time i.e. Check in + Measure blood pressure + Measure patient height and weight + Physical exam + Check out
= 6 + 4 + 4 + 15 + 5
= 34 minutes
If patients have visited past year :
Flow time
= sum of 4 activity time i.e. check in + Measure blood pressure + Physical exam + Check out
= 6 + 4 + 15 + 5
= 30 minutes
60% ( i.e. 0.6 ) of patients will require height and weight to be measured with flow time 34 minutes and 40% ( 0.4 ) of patients will not require their height and weight not to be measured resulting in flow time of 30 minutes .
Therefore , effective flow time
= 0.6 x 34 + 0.4 x 30
= 20.4 + 12
= 32.4 minutes
New flow time = 32.4 minutes
New flow time = 32.4 minutes
