Question
Analyzing Individual and Group Decisions
Think of two important decisions you have recently made— one you made individually and one you made as a member of a group. Describe each decision. For each decision, answer these questions:
1. Was the process by which you made the decision more accurately described by the classical model or by March and Simon’s model? Why?
2. In what ways were heuristics involved in making the decision?
3. Was escalation of commitment involved in making the decision?
4. Why did you make the individual decision on your own rather than in a group? Do you think a better decision would have been made if the decision had been made in a group? Why or why not?
5. Why did you make the other decision as a member of a group rather than on your own? Do you think you could have made a better decision on your own? Why or why not?
Explanation / Answer
The two decisions I made recently are:
1) I will describe it as Simon's approach as in both the decisions I used three step process of Intelligence - Design - Choice. Intelligence deals with finding the problem, Design is to decide on criteria to make the decisions that can result in optimal choice and Choice is to ultimately opt for the best alternative. In case of adding new supplier, it was logical as current supplier was not able to give Quality product at the required time. In 2nd, we had to increase production, so needed to think of various options for best outcome
2) It involved heuristic as in 1st case there was experience from 1st supplier and the potential issue encountered. In case of Group decision, it was a rule of thumb to 1st go for more number of labors and try to support requirement without overspending
3) No, it did not involve escalation of commitment as decisions did not have any negative impact on employees
4) I made individual decision as it was more logical to opt for new supplier due to difficulty in existing suppliers. Even if discussed in group, the outcome would be same. Waiting for group decision could have delayed the process ultimately impacting business. So, it was good to have individual decision
5) The other decision involved impacting entire workforce as working for three shifts or on Sunday will involve all the people. So, it was essential to involve team and sensitize them about the problem and take their opinion
